Are the sizes big or small?

As a general rule, you should probably use the size you usually do.

However!...
Be aware that you may often choose a slightly longer shoe than necessary to accommodate your toes, because many shoes are built on a narrow last.

It can therefore be a good idea to spend a little extra time finding your precise size by measuring your largest foot.

For example, visit our Size Guide and find the length and width of your feet before choosing your shoe. This saves many frustrating exchanges.

Wool shoes should ideally feel like a warm and soft hug when you put them on.

Here you can choose shoes that fit your feet precisely!

For many years, we have worn narrow shoes with pointed toes that are actually too narrow and deform our feet.
The last determines the shape of the shoe. Even many slippers are "cut over a narrow last," and we have done something about that.

Choose from 3 lasts!
We felt our wool shoes over a Narrow, Wide, and Medium Wide last.
So now you have the opportunity to find a shoe that fits your feet better - not just in length, but also in width.

(You'll find the Size Guide to the right - just above the sizes.)

How do I care for my wool products

Wool is "self-cleaning"
Air your wool shoes well between uses. Wool contains lanolin, and is therefore dirt and odor repellent, so you avoid washing. You can usually knock dust and dirt off your wool shoes.

Washable
If it becomes necessary, wash them gently by hand or on a wool program with wool soap.

Where does the wool come from?

We use Mulesing-Free wool from New Zealand, Australia, and Tibet.

The wool is not carbonized, and if it is dyed, it is with the highest quality dyes that meet all our European and Danish legal requirements for colorants.

Can you wash wool shoes?

Yes!
You can wash your wool shoes at 30° on a wool cycle.
You can use a shampoo or a special wool detergent.

Won't the shoes be too hot in the summer?

There are no cooling elements in the shoes, but wool is excellent at absorbing moisture and wicking it away from your skin.
Therefore, you will likely sweat just as much in a pair of wool shoes in the summer as in other shoes. The only difference is that you won't be "sloshing around" in your own foot sweat.
Also note that the lanolin in the wool prevents unpleasant odors from penetrating the wool.

Always remember to air out all your shoes thoroughly so they are dry when you put them on.

Won't your shoes start to smell if you wear them barefoot?

Our wool is not carbonised, so it is pleasantly soft, and it contains a natural layer of lanolin around each individual fibre. This lanolin acts as a strong protection against dirt and odour.

So no! Your shoes won't smell bad just because you wear them barefoot.
Remember to air them out well so they are dry when you put them on.

Are they waterproof?

Our wool shoes are not waterproof, but they repel water and are thus water-resistant.

Wool contains lanolin, which protects each individual wool fiber against dirt, odor, and water. Therefore, water will run off the wool. This means that light rain will also run off your wool shoes. If you step in a puddle or force water into the felt, you will probably get wet feet.

What are the soles made of?

All our soles are made of natural rubber. This means rubber derived from a rubber tree, also called latex. Most of it comes from Sri Lanka, but you can safely compost it in your Danish garden.

Are the soles non-slip?

Latex rubber or natural rubber (from a rubber tree) is the material you might know from the classic old "desert boots". It is one of the most slip-resistant materials available.

Can you go outside in the shoes?

YES!
Wool shoes are some of the most comfortable things you can put on your feet, and it doesn't get any less comfortable when you wear them outside.
The thick rubber sole is both waterproof and non-slip.

Use your SlipOns and Espadrilles as lovely summer shoes, and just pull on your boots for an autumn or winter trip to the city.

Are the products organic?

We cannot certify that our wool shoes are organic, but we can guarantee that they are made from 100% natural materials.

Is all felt made of wool?

No, not all felt is made of wool.
Often, you will find that the felt is made of polyester, or that a plastic material has been blended with the wool.
We want to avoid plastic entirely for several reasons.
Firstly, because we see no reason to use plastic. (It is often used because it is cheaper).
Secondly, because plastic material easily absorbs unpleasant odors and cannot wick moisture away from the skin.

Are there heavy metals in the paints?

There are absolutely no heavy metals in the colours!
All colours we use are of the highest German standard and comply with all our strict Danish and European legal requirements.

Are the goods designed in Denmark?

About the Production

Where are they manufactured?

We produce all our wool shoes in Nepal, where we work closely with a skilled and experienced workshop, employing many trained felt craftspeople.

Why produce in Nepal?

When Thomas Glerup was co-owner of Glerups, he participated in a Danida project that resulted in a workshop in Kathmandu, Nepal. He continued this workshop when he started Betterfelt and secured a contract with ECCO. Thomas Glerup has thus personally trained a large number of skilled employees in Nepal so that they can compete with the more industrialized production in Europe.

Is there equal pay at the workshop?

Naturally, there is equal pay for equal work in our workshops.

However, this is not a given in Nepal, which has a rather old-fashioned view of gender roles. Nevertheless, we make it a point of honour to pay our felt artisans at the same level as a male schoolteacher in Kathmandu.
In addition, a small extra savings fund is paid out, which can be disbursed on special occasions, such as weddings, etc. Finally, our felt artisans receive a contribution that ensures schooling for their school-aged children.

Are the products designed in Denmark

Yes, all our products are designed by Thomas Glerup Kristensen.
Thomas has worked with wool for over two decades and was a co-founder of both Glerups and Betterfelt.
